GWS Posted March 5, 2017 Share #703 Posted March 5, 2017 Steve, Last October, there was a very similar helmet being sold on eBay by a dealer from Indiana. I wonder if these were from a local VFW or American Legion hall? I tried to find photos of the eBay sale, but they have been removed already. Yes, maybe a VFW or American Legion May have done this as part of a memorial. It makes more sense because I can't imagine someone in the family doing it. Thanks. gman5004 Posted March 19, 2017 Share #704 Posted March 19, 2017 Hi all, This is my only militaria piece from WWI, it was my Great x3 Uncles, he was in the MG company, 6th marines. He fought, I think, at belleau wood. He was killed in france 1918, his name Was George Gord. I found his draft card, so I'll have to look at that. I'll get more pics when I can, Thanks, Garrison M. Marchville1918 Posted November 21, 2017 Share #715 Posted November 21, 2017 This helmet is a mystery to me. Do any of you know what GEC 11 stands for? It must be for a unit rather than the soldiers initials. I speculate that it stands for Prisoner of War Guard Escort Company 11. In looking at Pershing's 1920 report I see that there were such companies. I just don't know if GEC was the typical way of referring them. What do you think? Normally helmets with a red stripe like that are factory rejects marked with the red stripe. They also had a hole punched into the brim. They were used for training in the US and were not supposed to be sent overseas.

Saber617 Posted November 22, 2017 Share #719 Posted November 22, 2017 No no hole in brim this was not a factory reject it was a painted helmet from the soldier. I wish I had more info on it but it is legit.
