SchwarzStock Posted October 20, 2025 #1 Posted October 20, 2025 Hi, just happened on the site this past week. I was in the Navy as a Corpsman for 4 years, had a break then in Army SF for 18 more. I was initially a 11B/C (SF) and later an 18B, 18F and 18Z. Served mostly in the 10th SF but made a few trips with the 7th to Korea. My interests are mostly guns and knives. Here is a picture from 1991 with half of my "A-Team" doing a little water training near Mersin Turkey following Desert Storm.
VNAMVET70 Posted October 22, 2025 #3 Posted October 22, 2025 Welcome to the forum...the motherlode of u.s. militaria. My passion is similar to yours, WW2, Korea, & Vietnam war knives and guns. My primary MOS 17A Combat Surveillance & Target Acquisition. Been to Germany many times.
SchwarzStock Posted October 23, 2025 Author #4 Posted October 23, 2025 I am confused by your screen name (VNAMVET70) and MOS, were you in VN? I can't find it but I don't believe 17A has existed for much more than 10-15 years.
VNAMVET70 Posted October 23, 2025 #5 Posted October 23, 2025 I was drafted summer of 1969. After Basic at Ft Benning, went to AIT at Ft Sill, OK, for 17A training (Combat Surveillance/Target Acquisition) . Then, off to Vietnam 1970-1971.

The vanity license plate below was on my red 1971 Corvette LS6 with 454 / 425 hp, 4-speed rock crusher transmission. I plan to make the license plate my avatar here on the forum, someday. Got to read up on how to do it.
SchwarzStock Posted October 24, 2025 Author #7 Posted October 24, 2025 The only reference to 17A I have found is to a Cyber Operations Officer, nothing from VN era.
VNAMVET70 Posted October 24, 2025 #8 Posted October 24, 2025 This should clear things up on MOS 17A training at Ft Sill, Okla in 1969. This is a copy of my 17A certificate.
atb Posted October 24, 2025 #9 Posted October 24, 2025 SchwarzStock, see this site . https://www.ed-thelen.org/MOS-Vietnam-era.html
VNAMVET70 Posted October 24, 2025 #10 Posted October 24, 2025 Are you satisfied 17A MOS existed during the Vietnam War? The MOS chart even got my secondary MOS correct.
