themick Posted October 18, 2025 #3 Posted October 18, 2025 All I can say is that the belt is a very nice pre-war USMC garrison belt, worn on the Green and Khaki blouses. Those pre war ones are themselves hard to find. Steve
Rambo7 Posted October 18, 2025 Author #4 Posted October 18, 2025 Thanks Steve I can't find any information on it. Has R.B. Ryan as Bout winner. Very neat item. Wish I could find out more about it
themick Posted October 26, 2025 #6 Posted October 26, 2025 Re: Stars and Stripes boxing bout Here is an article in a current issue of S&S about a boxing bout held recently in Japan. While your belt deals with an event during WWII (1944 I think), this might give you an idea of what these things are about. I know the Marines used to be big on boxing. My Dad was a Marine boxing coach on the USS Nevada before the war. So, it would seem your belt belonged to a USMC participant of one of these bouts held at Camp Pendelton in 1944. This might give you a bit of context for your nice belt. Steve

AxolotlHelmet Posted October 27, 2025 #8 Posted October 27, 2025 Can't find any evidence for him being the original owner or not, but Actor Robert B. Ryan (played Brig. Gen. Gavin in The Longest Day) was the heavyweight boxing champion at Dartmouth during the 30s, and during the war he was a drill instructor at Camp Pendleton for some time. Thus, it possibly could belong to him.

Here it is: Distinguished U.S. actor and longtime civil rights campaigner Robert Bushnell Ryan was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Mable Arbutus (Bushnell), a secretary, and Timothy Aloysius Ryan, whose wealthy family owned a real estate firm. His father was of Irish ancestry, and his mother was of English and Irish descent. Ryan served in the United States Marines as a drill sergeant (winning a boxing championship) and went on to become a key figure in post WWII American Film Noir and western productions. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0752813/bio/ Also, Ryan was at Pendleton from January 1944 through part of 1945. This fits perfectly!! Steve
