yokota57 Posted September 24, 2025 #1 Posted September 24, 2025 Anyone have an exact ID on this one? Brady or Tachi based C-46 maintenance? Korean War up into the 50s.

MWalsh Posted September 26, 2025 #3 Posted September 26, 2025 When you are searching for info on this, don’t forget that the Marines and Navy flew the C-46 as the R5C, well into the 1950s. So keep that in mind. Also, the upside down chevron on his left sleeve is interesting… that chevron would align with a Navy Petty Officer more than any USAF or USMC rank, and the gray or gray / blue color to the uniform might indicate Navy as well, and the same with the crow head, the crow being associated with Navy Petty Officer ranks. The headset being worn would sure indicate crew also. With all that, I’d guess that you’d want to look along the USN route.
MWalsh Posted September 26, 2025 #4 Posted September 26, 2025 I am going to guess that GABEL is also the owners last name. Looks like a well used patch, I would assume he wore it on his flight jacket.
MWalsh Posted September 26, 2025 #5 Posted September 26, 2025 All purely speculation on my part, but just some thoughts on it

yokota57 Posted September 26, 2025 Author #7 Posted September 26, 2025 Thanks to MWalsh's excellent USN/R5C tip I found Alexander A. Gabel, Jr. 1931-2005 on findagrave. **US Navy veteran / Korean War**. This may (or may not) be the guy.
MWalsh Posted September 27, 2025 #8 Posted September 27, 2025 Well, it’s as good a start as any I suppose. Can’t have been too many squadrons that flew the R5C by that point, so that may be a fairly small search for info to use to perhaps narrow it further
yokota57 Posted October 1, 2025 Author #9 Posted October 1, 2025 Haven't been able to locate any information on USN R5C squadrons in Japan during the Korean War or shortly after. Patch is in-hand, no glow, 6 inches (vertical).
QED4 Posted October 31, 2025 #11 Posted October 31, 2025 Try the Electronic Warfare units in Japan. Electronic Warfare personal are referred to as Old Crows and I would guess AF from the blue and white chevron. The parts flying out appear to be a cathode tube and a vacuum tube not sure what the other two things are.
