samhouston1971 Posted September 23, 2025 #1 Posted September 23, 2025 I picked up this flight helmet from a thrift store in a small town near Austin, TX over the weekend. I usually stick to WWII, but couldn't resist this. I think I found a photo of the plane that matches the number on the back of the helmet.
Randy Posted September 24, 2025 #2 Posted September 24, 2025 Yep, that would be a very late model F-4E as flown by the 704th TFS before entering the Full Scale Aerial Target Program. Some of the jets were the manned variety like this one, and had several paint scheme variations showing the colors worn over the F-4's long USAF service. The rest ended up covered in orange and shot down for missile tests and such. The 82d Aerial Targets Sq Det 1 was located at Holloman AFB, NM. Here's some of the 70th patches from the F-4 era. Nice helmet! Randy

Nice helmet! Randy Thanks, Randy. That's just the awesome information I was hoping to find. I figured it had to be from Bergstrom AFB, but my google skills weren't up to the task.
