hink441 Posted August 23, 2025 #1 Posted August 23, 2025 My new yard art anchor. This was purchased in a Norfolk Va neighborhood next to the Naval base. I didn’t think it was a USN anchor when I bought it. While cleaning it up and removing years of rust I uncovered some markings on the balance band. I didn’t recognize the markings so I asked sone guys on a maritime antique Facebook page. They said it came from a USN Covered Lighter YF-287. This Lighter was built at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth Va in 1941. It served in Norfolk during the war years. After the war it was stationed at the Naval Station Newport RI. YF-287 performed torpedo range duties and was re-classified to YFTR-287 in 1965. The boat was struck from the Navy register in 1998 and was sold in 2001. Here are some pictures of the Boat and of the anchor.
Manky bandage Posted August 24, 2025 #3 Posted August 24, 2025 Now that really is a smart and unique piece to have, id be tempted to hang a nice bird feeder off it. Love it.
hink441 Posted August 24, 2025 Author #4 Posted August 24, 2025 Thank you, The anchor is also marked “Annealed Steel” on the shank.
Salvage Sailor Posted August 24, 2025 #6 Posted August 24, 2025 Nice Kedge anchor. Many of these have adorned shore quarterdecks at USN facilities.

Thanks for the comment. Now I’m going to have to try and find a matching anchor to place on the other side of the driveway and have my own quarterdeck. 😂👍
hink441 Posted October 13, 2025 Author #8 Posted October 13, 2025 While trying to find more info on the YF-287/YFRT-287 vessel that my anchor came from I ran across some more info. Apparently the YF-287 was used in a Martin Scorsese movie in 2008. The vessel was used for the movie “Shutter Island” with Leonardo DiCaprio. Here are some more pics. One picture shows the YF-287 under her own power. I haven’t seen the movie, I heard it’s a real twisted suspenseful movie. 😳
p51mission Posted October 13, 2025 #10 Posted October 13, 2025 It looks really nice all cleaned up. Yf-287 has got some interesting history, one being that Film!
