Colonel Sanders Posted August 22, 2025 #1 Posted August 22, 2025 Hey everyone, I picked up this helmet lately and thought it was a pretty cool piece, not sure of the exact model as the label is hard to read. The inside is in rough shape, but the custom camo paint job displays beautifully. Last name on helmet is "Stone." I was wondering what were these USAF helmets with the boom mics used for?
phantomfixer Posted August 22, 2025 #2 Posted August 22, 2025 Nice helmet for sure!!! boom mics are usually indicative of low speed aircraft, such as helicopters, cargo, observation etc.. interesting on your helmet, the O2 receiver has been removed, and the mount for the mic is installed upside down, generally the mount faces down and usually if the helmet has a O2 mask receiver, the boom mic is mounted to the receiver vs removing the receiver..
phantomfixer Posted August 22, 2025 #3 Posted August 22, 2025 Looking closer, the earphones look to be from the black USAF headsets… the earphone retaining string looks to be wire vs the cord string, and the holes for the wire are not factory… IMO… this was put together… most likely period correct in the field, by a crewman.. 👍👍🇺🇸✌️
phantomfixer Posted August 22, 2025 #5 Posted August 22, 2025 The helmet shell looks to be a Navy APH-5.. others will chime in shortly… what is painted on the visor cover under the knob?
Colonel Sanders Posted August 22, 2025 Author #6 Posted August 22, 2025 It’s the last name, here is a pic of the label inside
