P-59A Posted August 4, 2025 #1 Posted August 4, 2025 On my post on my Grandpaws Peal Harbor service page I was digging down on his participation during the 2nd Taiwan Straight crises. I was provided the information I needed but when you solve one issue another one comes along. Asnation was helping me with this. Grandpaw was on the USS Bayfield 1958-60 during that crisis. He was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the China Service Medal. Asnation sent me the following "The China Service Medal was awarded for service in China between July 7, 1937, and September 7, 1939, and again for service between September 2, 1945, and April 1, 1957." I went over the all the ships he was on from 1940 to 1960. The only ship he was on that had a connection to China was the USS Bayfield. I posted the ships log for that time and clearly it participated on the 2nd Taiwan Straight Crisis and I posted every ship he served on and that is the only ship. The information on when the China Service Medal was issued is not correct. He was awarded that medal for service starting when they left San Diego on Oct 1958. The ship did two tours having returned to San Diego then back to Taiwan then back to San Diego in April 1960. This is for you experts on medals to figure out.
Bearmon Posted August 4, 2025 #2 Posted August 4, 2025 The Bayfield did not receive a China Service Medal, but it did receive an Armed Forces Expeditionary twice in the late 50's both of them for the Tawain Straight OPNAV 1650 list all the awards by command OPNAV 1650
P-59A Posted August 4, 2025 Author #3 Posted August 4, 2025 Bearmon, Thanks for the reply and the link to that site. I went to it and found the Bayfield and that list started at 1958. I know the Bayfield served in WW2 and was a part of the D-Day operation and I know the Bayfield was given the CSM in 1949. What am I missing on that site? It should have that information if it is a complete listing for that ship. This that first block of info after Bayfield..."BAYFIELD APA 33 AE 26-DEC-1958 30-DEC-1958 H 25-NOV-1959 26-NOV-1959 G" This is from other sites that do not cover that ship in the 50's..."Following World War II USS Bayfield was assigned to Occupation and China service in the Far East for the following periods: Navy Occupation Service Medal China Service Medal (extended) 20 to 30 September 194521 July 1947 to 2 March 1948 19 to 23 November 194529 November 1948 to 30 March 1949 16 to 21 January 1946" This was found at https://www.bing.com/ck/a?!&&p=893f5869578a9e68fbd8d85fb9ca265c0b2f0cb420f17d071a7c752d538149d1JmltdHM9MTc1NDI2NTYwMA&ptn=3&ver=2&hsh=4&fclid=23b090c5-5843-6a04-3e99-9f3459ad6b63&psq=uss+bayfield+apa-33&u=a1aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cubmF2c291cmNlLm5ldC9hcmNoaXZlcy8xMC8wMy8wMzAzMy5odG0&ntb=1
P-59A Posted August 5, 2025 Author #4 Posted August 5, 2025 I did not dig deep enough. When Granpaw was on the USS Toledo, they were in China. Toledo operated out of Tsingtao, China, during the evacuation of Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist Chinese forces to Taiwan. On 16 September, the warship departed the China coast and headed for Bremerton, Washington, entering the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard on 5 October for her first major overhaul.
usmedalman Posted March 25 #5 Posted March 25 I am a little late to the party, but according to SECNAV 15, 790, Decorations, Medals and Ribbons of the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Coast Guard, 1953, Bayfield was awarded the China Service Medal specifically for service during two periods: Jul. 27, 1947–Mar. 2, 1948 Nov. 29, 1948–Mar. 30, 1949 SECNAV 15, 790 is difficult to decipher because, as you noted, the rolls for each ship contain reference to both the Occupation Service Medal and the China Service Medal with time periods often overlapping.
