BPN_PacNW Posted July 31, 2025 #1 Posted July 31, 2025 Hello, I'm new to the group (long time guest/lurker) and recently acquired an M1 Helmet. It looks to be heavily painted with sand finish, was represented as a WW2/Vietnam re-tread and the chinstrap is 80's vintage... Best I can tell is that it has a front seam manganese rim as appears to have a bit of rust color, not stainess. Is this representative of a late war 'transitional' helmet or a clone of some sort? My understanding is that a guideline to use is front seam is second world war, but I am new at collecting these. Thanks, and apologies if this is posted in the wrong section or similar. Also, the front seam divots appear oval, and maybe there's a heat stamp hidden under all the pain.
elh1311 Posted August 1, 2025 #2 Posted August 1, 2025 Appears to be a WWII produced helmet that has been heavily reworked over the years. The shade of green and sand texture is likey Vietnam vintage while the chinstraps are post-Vietnam.
BPN_PacNW Posted August 1, 2025 Author #3 Posted August 1, 2025 Thanks, appreciate the input. I'm thinking probably a McCord since the rim welds are oval and they made more than Schlueter. I'm just getting interested in these, they were being phased out for Kevlar helmets when I was on active duty in the early 80's.
BagelEnjoyer Posted August 3, 2025 #4 Posted August 3, 2025 Your initial assessment is correct, looks like a late WW2 "transitional" McCord helmet to me. That "pea green" shade could be from either the Vietnam era or the '80s. I'd lean towards the paint being from the '80s with this particular helmet, but its hard to tell from the photographs.
