DMD Posted July 31, 2025 #1 Posted July 31, 2025 I am not finding much information about this squadron, other than they flew Sikorsky H-19s and Piasecki H-21s for USAF helicopter training. They were at Stead AFB (1958 - 1966) and moved to Sheppard AFB from (1968 - 1971). Was this patch worn during either (or both) of these time periods? I remember seeing a patch someone claimed was the 3638th but it had the eggbeater design instead of the hummingbird. Perhaps the eggbeater design was from the earlier or later period?
42ndbombers Posted July 31, 2025 #2 Posted July 31, 2025 usafunithistory.com has three pages of info available.
DMD Posted August 1, 2025 Author #3 Posted August 1, 2025 Yes, I had seen that document and it's an excellent summary. I did not expect to see a training squadron involved in Operation Dominic plus all the rescue missions they flew. I guess my real question is would this patch be worn at Stead, Sheppard, or both?
Randy Posted August 2, 2025 #4 Posted August 2, 2025 Best of my knowledge, the patch was the same for both locations. The eggbeater patch was a morale patch worn mostly by the IPs. The rescues/nuke missions would have been flown by the highly experienced IPs. Randy
