Not a dog tag but a pocket compass

I have had this US aviator's Wittnauer pocket compass for several decades. What is interesting is on the inside lid is scratched the initials A V M and the serial number 37036442 Any idea of how I go about researching this? I have always wondered who A V M was and his history in WW2.
