tony75 Posted June 10, 2025 #1 Posted June 10, 2025 Hello What are your thoughts on this Unit marked canteen? Dated 1907 Not sure of what unit this is? Someone mentioned the possibility of Buffalo soldier because they were attached to the 24th later on? They were always part of the 9th & 10th Correct? Thank you Tony
atb Posted June 10, 2025 #2 Posted June 10, 2025 No Buffalo Soldier connection I can see. F Company 11th Infantry. Soldier number 24 within his unit. All of his equipment would have "24" marked on it for purposes of identification and accountability. Whoever mentioned it to you seems confused about the 9th and 10th (Cavalry?) and 24th (Infantry?). The 9th and 10th Cavalry were black units. The 9th and 10th Infantry were white units. The 24th Infantry was a black unit. It's a dismounted canteen (triangular strap loops) with a mounted canteen strap (leather).
