Two Crates of 30 x 168mm GAU-8/A (A-10 Thunderbolt) Rounds

I picked up these inert dummy and durable dummy rounds from a guy who found them in a storage locker he was cleaning out. The paperwork found with the crates indicated that these were produced by Honeywell in 1972 and shipped to Philco-Ford for their GAU-8/A program. Philco-Ford was in competition with General Dynamics at the time for developing a 30mm rotary cannon for the newly announced Fairchild A-10/A Thunderbolt II attack "tank buster" aircraft. GE won the contract with their gun that utilized(s) the 30 x 173mm cartridge. The storage locker that contained these crates was not far from the old location of the Philco-Ford plant in Newport Beach, CA. Some pretty cool history, especially for a military aviation buff.

Very cool 30mm! Would you want to sell one of each variant?

Really cool find--thanks for posting.  The Philco-Ford variant was/is much rarer than the normal round.

Jason,

I do not wish to be contacted by you, so please lay off, both here and via PM's. This was not a For Sale post. Thank you.

This is precisely why many members here (including me) do not post their militaria.

People can't seemingly discriminate between what is / is not a sale listing.

It is very unfortunate that it has come to this. I am sure all legitimate and productive members here are missing out on some very interesting and educational material.
