Hello and welcome! I believe both cans are WWII era construction. Sorry but I cannot give an interpretation of the markings. I believe there is a post somewhere on the forum that explains them. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be able to answer you.

Both are WW2. The one with the yellow lettering was re-packed post WW2 and may have Been Armor Piercing Incendiary Tracer (?)

The markings indicate 250 rounds of Cal .30 in web belts for the M1919 series Browning MGs.  The actual mix would be four armor piercing cartridges then one tracer round, repeated for the entire 250 round belt. Van Balkenburgh's book, which lists repacked lot numbers, does not give specific years, but states (page 123) that the 900,000 series of lot numbers was repacked in 1946.

Hope this helps.

Sorry--I must have fumble-fingered this reply:  900,000 series of repacked lot numbers was in 1944!  I apologize for my mistake.

I have heard that this style of metal ammo box is the first model of the metal, the more streamlined of ammo cans came later.  Any opinions?
