Super heavy plaques (about 4 lbs each) does anyone know what the purpose of these was?

Nice plaques. Im collecting and permanently displaying plaques like yours at Doherty Navy JROTC “ Hall of Honor”. Google us. We are saving naval history for future generations. 135 on display. 75 more going up!

These plaques are given as gifts normally to Officers or Chief Petty Officers after a 2-4 year tour on the ship or sub. They are normally mounted on a wood plaque with a name plate for the person it was given to, These did not have wood plaque??

No, no plaque. They came from a man I believe was involved in decommissioning these vessels. Thank you for the insight, that is a wonderful collection you have going, much respect
