USMC Corpsman Posted May 17, 2025 #1 Posted May 17, 2025 Hi all, first time poster. Have loved reading all things on this site. I picked up this practice grenade at a flea market. My understanding is it’s an MK-2 or M21 practice grenade WW2 era? Looking for any insight into what I actually have. There appears to be an engraving of a “6” and some other letters or numbers I can’t make out on the side. thank you!
Persian Gulf Command Posted May 17, 2025 #2 Posted May 17, 2025 Thanks for posting your Practice Frag Grenade. You have a late WW2 Mk. II, with a nice M10A3 fuse. Notice the "half moon" Striker Hinge Pin. This fuze dates to the mid-1944 time frame. No reason to assume any other period for the grenade body as well. Besides the blue color denoting a practice grenade, the opening on the bottom of your grenade is larger than the standard threaded 9/16" hole, which would be the configuration for a grenade meant to contain an explosive load. This bottom opening for a grenade receiving a lethal load would be the same size as the threaded opening that receives the fuze. Practice grenades had a cork inserted in the opening. These grenades would contain a non-lethal amount of black gun powder meant to go off producing a puff of black smoke when used in training.

Thank you for the information. you never know what you’ll find at a flea market. $10 well spent I hope!
