Teamski Posted April 15, 2009 Share #1 Posted April 15, 2009 I don't know if this has been seen on this board, but a very interesting thread on a submerged B-29 in Alaska. http://warbirdinformationexchange.org/phpB...69f38306aa0e280 -Ski
gwb123 Posted April 15, 2009 Share #2 Posted April 15, 2009 I'm surprised it hasn't been recovered after all these years. I am guessing that the terrain may make the use of heavy equipment difficult.
Steindaddie Posted April 15, 2009 Share #3 Posted April 15, 2009 I was stationed at Eielson in 1981-82 and of course that B-29 was already there. In a pond not too far off the north end of the runway, it's easily accessible. Obviously one can walk out to it in winter, but also in summer; it's near the shore and we just laid down a board and walked out. Now that the ice had melted, you could stick your arm down in the cockpit through the water and move the throttles. The instrument panels were still in it but stripped clean. (Darn it) Other than being festooned with stickers, I'm surprised to see it basically looks the same as it did in 1981. A nice gravel road goes right up to the edge of the pond and the B-29 is only 10 feet away - I always thought recovering it wouldn't be too difficult. It is on base property though and the USAF never showed any real interest in hauling it out. ~Will
Teamski Posted April 15, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted April 15, 2009 With the back broken, it is questionable whether or not it is worth recovery. -Ski
