M1 Rifle, Building a Dummy for Dummies. Or At Least This Dummy

I’m filling my butt up nicely 🤣. I just picked up this oiler for the buttstock. A plastic oiler probably would have been more correct for a late 1943 Garand, but I cannot figure out how to tell what is a wartime plastic oiler and what is a postwar oiler. So figured a metal one would be best.

Oilers are a complete enigma to me, I have no clue what is wartime and post, the differences are so minute.

With me too. The plastic oilers started to replace the metal ones in 1942. So this one may be slightly too old for my 1943 rifle, but I imagine there were still some making their way through the system then. So this avoids any confusion with the plastic ones. Avoiding confusion has become a big goal in life at my old age .
I wouldn’t be at all surprised if there were one or two folks on the forum who know everything there is to know about oilers. The expertise around here is utterly amazing.

I just got another thing to put up my butt (stock), an M3 combination tool. Like the oiler, this may be slightly too early for my 1943 rifle, but it avoids dating confusion with the later M3A1 model with the bore brush attachment.
I have a couple of packs of 1944 cleaning patches on the way in.

Getting there slowly but surely.

Thank you for the interest. Things are winding down with my Garand project. I just have some details to work on. I do have a couple of accessories on the way. Once they come in, I will post them.

I think I now have all the butt stock accoutrements.

I originally bought a steel pull-through (top)but replaced it with an earlier brass version  (bottom).

I’ve been under the weather for a while and have had some unexpected bills, so my search for a nice bayonet will be on hold for a while.

I finally put the butt stock accessories away.
This project is pretty much wrapped up. As time and budget allows, I may make some improvements someday, but I’ll be moving into holiday mode, and doing some house renovations for the foreseeable future.
Thanks again everyone for your interest, input and just for looking in here.

If you’re looking for a bayonet, reach out to robinb on the forum I got both of mine from him and you won’t find a better price

I really was expecting this to be my last gun project out of personal choice, but got an email flyer from Sarco for a potential new one that tempted me. Not US so I won’t mention it, but the price for a partial parts kit was too good to pass up.
Unfortunately when I tried to place my order, it was rejected. I couldn’t figure out why until I found this notice. Grrrr…

I don’t want to get into politics here on the forum, but I guess my M1 really will be my last gun project 😭

I feel for you, they wouldn't even entertain posting a lockbar sight to the UK. All I got was a No not interested.... Strange

Mikie if you think that’s bad…

I live in SoCal and I was ordering a postwar Czech MG42 barrel case (to convert to wartime) and they were giving me a hard time on that! Not even an actual price of a firearm, just an accessory. It got flagged for some reason and they wouldn’t send it. I argued with them for weeks and luckily they did. They wouldn’t even give me a legitimate reason for why they wouldn’t send it. Just the California stigma I guess? Oh well. Sad to see your project come to an end really enjoyed the process.

I hate to hear of all the troubles we are all having about this. I had no idea about any of this beforehand. It looks like I finished up shopping for my Garand just in time.

Despite all this, I wish you all a great time collecting in 2026.
