A friend of mine has this can

DOT : Department of transport

USMC: US Metal container Company (Miami - OKLAHOMA)

5-91: May 1991

The questions are:

5B is for 5 Gallons, but the (  B  ) what does it mean ? I have seen other examples of cans with 5L ...

Then, blitz is a different model of can ?

The present example is for military or commercial purpose?

Many Thanks in advance

https://www.osha.gov/laws-regs/standardinterpretations/1996-08-26-0 The Department of Transportation has regulations for standards of everything including gas cans. They are not allowed to exceed 5 gallons and the 5B regulates what the can be used for. This can is not for transporting water, its rated for gas/deasil. Red normally denotes gas and yellow deasil in the civilian world, I have WW2 USMC gas can that is OD overall with a red diamond with a yellow surround in the center of the can and WW2 Army gas cans that are OD overall and the word GAS embossed in the metal. All of my metal US military gas cans have the date of manufacture and maker on the bottom.

Hello, that is not a military can, made for the civilian market.

That rings a bell, I came up on a little 1 or 2-gal metal gas can that had a USMC stamp on it. It baffled me quite a bit until I found out it was civilian...I forgot about that.
