R.A.Watkins Posted March 16, 2025 #1 Posted March 16, 2025 I'm trying to establish if the attached image was ever developed beyond the pencil pencil sketch stage. All I really know about this outfit was that they were trained at Camp Kearny, San Diego Calif in early 1940 and later made a combat jump in support of the campaign for Bougainville. I welcome any and all additional information on this topic. A wartime images depicting the usage of this emblem in signage, stationary, etc. would be great.

I’m curious, why do you think it’s the 3rd battalion para Marines?
R.A.Watkins Posted March 16, 2025 Author #3 Posted March 16, 2025 That's the way this image was titled when I came across it.
Tonomachi Posted March 17, 2025 #4 Posted March 17, 2025 Someone out there has used this image to produce some fake patches which I kept photos of below.

This fake patch labeled 3rd parachute regiment, the Marines never got past the 1st regiment which consisted of three battalions.

Brig Posted March 18, 2025 #8 Posted March 18, 2025 18 hours ago, irish said: 3rd Para Marine Officers Mess bar Noumea WW2.. You can see the image painted on the bar Pretty conclusive evidence right there, the crest was for the 3rd Parachute Battalion of the 1st Parachute Regiment.
R.A.Watkins Posted March 18, 2025 Author #9 Posted March 18, 2025 Fantastic Image. I frankly had little hope of finding a period photo depicting this insignia. Very much obliged for your sharing this photo. RW

Yep, 3rd Battalion is a thing............ The fake patch is labeled 3rd Regiment (3rd Regt didn't exist )

CRBeery Posted April 9, 2025 #12 Posted April 9, 2025 Here is an example that I own. I have no background information on it unfortunately other than a gentleman that wrote a book on leather patches had handled this at the SOS and liked it. Anecdotal at best.
R.A.Watkins Posted April 15, 2025 Author #13 Posted April 15, 2025 Just out of curiosity, does anyone know just how many RKO 'movie' unit patches were actually created? It seems as if these items have actually developed into a very active collecting cult of their own.
