Hi everyone, I’m looking to buy this jumper but I don’t know if it’s real, or commercially made. Seller claims it to be from the 1920s or 30s.

From these photos, this LOOKS, like a standard issue jumper from, anytime between 1911, ( when the blue jumper was untucked and 1933, when the Navy shifted to the dsrk blue wool melton wool that was used from 1933-1973.

Ok thank you! I’m curious about those stars, I’ve never seen those before. I’ve only seen the stars made up of the stitching

Can’t really see them. Are they separate pieces of cloth sewn on?  Most stars of the era were literally hand stitched into the collar, until sometime in WW2.

Was it wool flannel at that time?

Oh yes. Much lighter weight than the later melton wool.   While there were denim work uniforms from 1917, prior to that, this was all the Sailor had ( yes, whites in summer). This would be worn for everyday work wear along with dress. They would have multiple sets. In 1917, the denim “Dungarees” were introduced, but only for specific people, and for specific duties. At the same time, the Navy authorized that older blue jumpers could have the cuffs cut off and the stars on the collar cut off and piping stripped to create an “Undress” jumper for working. The fabric really is pretty nice. It’s also why the matching trousers were lined, because they tended to wear and pill up.
