manayunkman Posted February 21, 2025 #1 Posted February 21, 2025 This image is in a family album. Family lore is that this is a Confederate soldier. Can anyone confirm this?
thetennman Posted March 11, 2025 #2 Posted March 11, 2025 Looks like a Confederate uniform. His rank can be determined by the chevrons on his sleeves. He has three stripes on each sleeve, which indicates the rank of sergeant in most Confederate military units. The hat he holds appears to be a slouch hat, which was widely worn by Confederate soldiers.
268th C.A. Posted March 11, 2025 #3 Posted March 11, 2025 No doubt. 1861 image, Confederate, he wears a Secession badge. look at other pictures in the photo album see if you can determine with side of your family it came from, start digging back, it's a good chance you'll find clues to he is. looks like Corporal chevrons too me. With a jeweler's loupe you may be able to make out the cap badge. Good luck! Great image.
manayunkman Posted March 11, 2025 Author #4 Posted March 11, 2025 Wow!! That’s great news!! Thank you both for your in depth insights.

Please check out my new pictures. Thank you
268th C.A. Posted March 13, 2025 #14 Posted March 13, 2025 Yours truly, C G Talcott Capt. F Co. 63rd Regt. New York State National Guards July 1863 Notice the 6 in 1863 and 63rd the same. Thats what I see. 1, 2, 3, 4 July 1863 is the same month as the battle of Gettysburg. I can't make out the day in front of (?) July 1863
History Man Posted March 13, 2025 #16 Posted March 13, 2025 Captain Chauncey Goodrich Talcott is seen here as a Captain in the New York National Guard.
268th C.A. Posted March 13, 2025 #17 Posted March 13, 2025 What's odd 3-day enlistment.... New York State keeps great records, google into NY Civil War soldiers
268th C.A. Posted March 13, 2025 #18 Posted March 13, 2025 68th Regiment, New York National Guard Mustered in: June 25, 1863 Mustered out: August 3, 1863. The following is taken from New York in the War of the Rebellion, 3rd ed. Frederick Phisterer. Albany: J. B. Lyon Company, 1912. This regiment, then located in Chautauqua county, but now not in service, furnished a number of men for the 72nd Volunteers, and, commanded by Col. David S. Forbes, it left the State June 24, 1863, en route to Harrisburg, Pa., for a service of thirty days. It served in the 5th Brigade, 1st Division, Department Susquehanna, and was mustered out of the United States service July 29, 1863, at Elmira, N. Y.
268th C.A. Posted March 13, 2025 #20 Posted March 13, 2025 72ND NY participated a lot to the War interesting history. I don't know if he was on the rolls of the 72nd NY Gen. Dan Sickles
268th C.A. Posted March 13, 2025 #21 Posted March 13, 2025 I don't think Charles G. Talcott is the same man he died in 62. The picture is dated 1863

manayunkman Posted March 13, 2025 Author #23 Posted March 13, 2025 Just to be clear, this is not a family album, I found it at the flea market. I want to thank 268th and History Man for finding all this information. Thank you both I love the Harrisburg connection, I lived there for 30 years. i wonder if the 72nd was sent there in the event the South crossed the Susquehanna.

I took a loupe to the photo and it looks like three letters, three numbers or the number 2 with a decoration on each side of it.
manayunkman Posted March 15, 2025 Author #25 Posted March 15, 2025 Anyone have any idea what this medal might be? Photo was taken in New York and the subjects name could be Cal B. Gorham ?
