Catfishcraig Posted February 15, 2025 #1 Posted February 15, 2025 I picked this up recently, it came out of Washington state. Its looks to be repainted to the point the markings may be covered over. I removed a small amount of felt at the bottom to expose it to see if it was filled in or solid. To me it looks solid and a real grenade body, but looking for the experts to chime in. Thanks Craig
Catfishcraig Posted February 15, 2025 Author #3 Posted February 15, 2025 Also I was able to screw in a M205A1 Fuze from a M21 that I have to test the threads and it fit just fine.
Kaptainssurplus Posted February 16, 2025 #4 Posted February 16, 2025 Real grenade body, notice it was cut short at the bottom, possibly a reject that was repurposed.
Catfishcraig Posted February 16, 2025 Author #5 Posted February 16, 2025 Great observation, I did not notice that. It almost looks ground down to make a larger base for the lighter. I’ve never seen this type of grenade lighter. I was told by the seller that Picco Logging Co was a small logging outfit in Montesano Bay WA. They probably would have had the equipment to make something like this. I can imagine this may have been sitting on an old office desk for along time. Craig
Catfishcraig Posted February 16, 2025 Author #6 Posted February 16, 2025 Who knows, maybe they used these to take down the big trees 👍
Kaptainssurplus Posted February 16, 2025 #7 Posted February 16, 2025 There were thousands of grenade bodies during and after the war that were rejected or not used. Multiple companies made lighters out of MK2 bodies, including the foudarys that cast them, basically repurposing them to recoup money. Also add in GIs making them as a kind of trench art as well. I have seen this style in the past before but not chopped/grinder down like that. Looks like.the tag could have been added later, I wonder if it was a marker tag or tag made for some type of award, as I have seen stuff like.that too.
Catfishcraig Posted February 16, 2025 Author #8 Posted February 16, 2025 Thank you for your help in confirming that it’s a real grenade body. I’ve had a few that were made from the cast iron fakes. I have another that I’ve had awhile that is more common (pictured below), in fact I’ve owned at least three others like it. But this one stumped me because I could not make out any markings and I didn’t want to ruin the paint looking for what I thought could be one under the paint. I did carefully remove the felt at the bottom to see if it had a hole, now I can glue it back and keep it as found. God bless Craig
Kaptainssurplus Posted February 16, 2025 #9 Posted February 16, 2025 Nice, that is the famous Littlestown Foundry and Hardware lighter. Probably one of the most common/iconic other than the later squeeze fuze MK2 lighter.
Stressman Posted February 22, 2025 #10 Posted February 22, 2025 Here is a 1946 advertisement showing your grenade lighter. The picture is not clear, but this grenade appears to have a shortened "bottom" like yours.
