Histres Posted February 13, 2025 #1 Posted February 13, 2025 Hello fellow wing nuts. I just picked up this Robbins pattern Aircrew wing and wonder if anyone else has seen one before. I was told by a prominent collector/dealer with 50 years of experience that he has seen this pattern before and knows it to be original as he has purchased uniforms directly from veterans or their families with these wings on them. I believe they may be an early version of the Robbins pattern made just after the Aircrew wings were approved and before going to the standard, flatter reverses. Also notice the stamped "Sterling" mark and many die marks on the reverse. Opinions?
5thwingmarty Posted February 13, 2025 #2 Posted February 13, 2025 I would say these are later versions, not early ones. Based on the dies and logs from Robbins that I was lucky enough to see first hand, there was no evidence that Robbins made these hollow back wings earlier than the slick back ones. Also, these appear to have the nail-head type pins which are generally considered to be later production compared to the soldiered-on pins. I believe there is at least some evidence that another company (Officers Supply Company?) sold these hollow-backed wing versions, but no evidence that they made them or who made the wings for them.
