gunbb Posted February 3 #1 Posted February 3 I just wondered if anyone could tell me who received this medal . I bought it from a guy I knew who said it was a repro because it had no numbers on the rim. A closer examination revealed there were in fact numbers. I also have a repro which is noticeably thicker . Thanks. The numbers are really faint and the camera I have is just what it is.
KurtA Posted February 4 #2 Posted February 4 This does not appear to be an original IW Medal, so any # it may have is irrelevant. An original traceable number would be deeply impressed and have an "No." prefix next to the number.
USMCR79 Posted February 4 #3 Posted February 4 Based on the large suspension ring I would say this was a 1950's Davidson (Studley) restrict made for the collector market. Typically 20-25 dollars on it's best day. Bill
Tom Trevor Posted February 4 #4 Posted February 4 FYI, The booklet The Indian Wars Campaign Medal Its History and Its Recipients John M. Carrol Compiler and editor List all the first issues of the medal all 1.967 of them. These were marked NO plus number them later issues were MNO. plus number and no records exist.
gunbb Posted February 4 Author #5 Posted February 4 I got the medal with no ribbon or ring and got those later. The medal shows heavy wear ,like some coins, [Walking Liberty Half], where the features are gone and just the basic coin is left. In using a better loop, I was reading the number upside down. It is 2199 and I see a faint part of an "N" . How would a restrike show a number on an edge ? Just asking.

History Man Posted February 4 #7 Posted February 4 100% agree that this is a later strike that someone punched a number in to.
KurtA Posted February 4 #8 Posted February 4 Being the seller sold it as a repro, I would assume you didn’t pay much. That would be good.
