Gear Fanatic Posted January 26 #1 Posted January 26 Hey all, thinking of trying to reproduce my own Haley liner for renacting, I have a large mold I models and 3D printer and my though was to wet cardboard sheets in a water/glue solution and layer them together and compress the into the the mold and then when it’s dry pull it out and cut if the excess, and then seal with resin or more PVA glue, then stretch the fabric over it and finish the inside with webbing. My main question is how were they actually produced and how could I tailor my creation to be more accurate?

Gear Fanatic Posted January 27 Author #3 Posted January 27 Thanks rooster I’ve already searched all of the threads for Hawleys, that one’s a good one!
Gear Fanatic Posted January 27 Author #4 Posted January 27 After searching through ALL of the Hawley threads I couldn’t find a single one that talks about reproducing one without using. High pressure asa base, anyone have any thoughts?
Gear Fanatic Posted January 27 Author #5 Posted January 27 Looked at using cardboard “pulp” with layers of paper? Or was going to do 2 layers of semi thick card board coated in PVA glue put into a Mold.
JohnK83882 Posted January 27 #6 Posted January 27 Here's a pic of a reject paper helmet liner turned into a 40s toy. There's a hole in it. Maybe give you some idea of the construction.
Gear Fanatic Posted January 27 Author #7 Posted January 27 Woah, do you have any more pictures? Inside, thickness? That is really cool, seen those on eBay a couple times.
JohnK83882 Posted January 27 #8 Posted January 27 Here's all the pics I have on it. found it in a valparaiso, indiana thrift store in 2015.
Gear Fanatic Posted January 27 Author #9 Posted January 27 Very cool, but I really need some reference for the Hawley type liner, not the below pressures.
Gear Fanatic Posted February 3 Author #10 Posted February 3 The first “test” if you can even call it that, turned out better than expected, it really took the shape of the honey well and once I find the right thickness of cardboard and can figure how to get it in there and molded with minimal folds this might be in the works.
Gear Fanatic Posted February 3 Author #11 Posted February 3 The piece I used wasn’t a full size piece so It really only shows the shape of the dome and there wasn’t enough material for the sides
