AARTPAC24 Posted January 24 #1 Posted January 24 As the topic title implies, I am looking for- if it exists- any roster of US pilots who were part of the Lafayette Escadrille who were awarded the Purple Heart during WWI. I recently acquired a miniature medal bar that has a screw-on French pilot insignia, and based on circumstantial evidence, believe he may have been one of those pilots. I am currently trying to cross reference names and their list of awards if mentioned to see if i have match to the incoming bar, but if such a list is out there it would help me significantly narrow down who my potential recipient might be. Thank you!
everforward Posted January 24 #2 Posted January 24 Some of this may sound really obvious, but I’m just trying to help, LOL…. If any of them were listed as wounded in action on their paperwork, then they certainly could wear a PH when they became available circa 1932….all that being said, I am pretty sure that anyone entitled to wear one wasn’t automatically sent the award. So I’d just look at each officer individually and if their AGO card exists the information should be there.
Allan H. Posted January 24 #4 Posted January 24 There are no WWI awards of the Purple Heart as the medal was not approved for issue until 1932. Soldiers and marines who served with the army were able to apply for issue of the medal, but it was not an automatic thing. Some medals were also awarded to Civil War, Indian War, and SAW veterans as well. The navy did not authorize award of the Purple Heart until sometime after the Pearl Harbor attack. In order to determine if a member of the Escadrille received a Purple Heart, you would have to have names of those who were listed as having been wounded and then check for award cards to see if medals were awarded. As an aside, the first posthumous awards of the Purple Heart were for the attack on Pearl Harbor. WWI and earlier KIAs were not entitled according to the awards criteria. Allan
Wharfmaster Posted January 24 #5 Posted January 24 Could an American claim a Purple Heart while serving in a French unit? Not US Air Service. W
Dave Posted January 24 #6 Posted January 24 Question...is the only connection to being a French pilot the wings? Or are there French awards specific to the LE?
