I have a canteen collection but don't remember ever having come across one like this. The style is Span-Am war but instead of a triangular strap catch, it's square. Additionally the canteen is dated 1914 with an "RIA" stamp. I thought by 1914 we were using the newer model canteen. No "US" I can see . Whether it's faded or never was there , I don't know. All comments, ideas welcomed .Thanks.

Rectangular loops indicate a mounted canteen. A short leather strap was used with it and attached to a saddle. The leather strap fits through the loops rather than using hooks. You should be able to find an illustration of the mounted strap online

I remember having or have , a canvas strap that they said was for mounted troops. But I believe it had hooks.

That is not a mounted canteen strap..That is the strap adopted for dismounted troops. It hooked onto the the newly adopted M1903 Cartridge Belt.bThe mounted strap is leather. Many collectors make that misidentification.

I found the leather strap one in Bill Machado's book  . I have this 1904 canvas strap. Do you think the "US" just faded out off the canteen ? If so, amazing the canvas stayed intact.

OK, thanks. Been awhile since I got into this stuff. I think I remember someone saying that a long time ago.

M1918 carrying strap is an error. That strap came into use in 1903. Not all reference books are correct in all aspects. Some perpetuate the same mistakes.

Unless the snap hooks on it instead of open hooks caused a model number change.
