Does anyone have an explanation for this?

This is a first for me. Only explanation I could give is the guard was made by the same supplier for Camillus, and Utica and stamped the names during production. The dual stamp may have resulted in an error of who was to receive that lot. Or, someone is playing games with collectors by restamping guards to increase the value as a rare item.  Just a guess!  SKIP

It's an oddity, but I think it's legit.  The grip looks like it was done by Utica.  A quick peek at the latch plate will tell a lot.  If the peen is beat up, then the M4 was disassembled.  If  the latch plate has a  punch dot instead of SP, (Standard Products), then it's a Utica (most of the time).   The Camillus peen is usually neat and tidy.  The Utica peens were often smashed, not only the tang was peened. but the latch plate was peened as well.  Or.......it's a post war put together.  Just spit balling a guess.
