FrankT Posted January 12 #1 Posted January 12 I am wondering if anyone has information or possesses an M1872 enlisted Infantry shako. If you could post pictures, I would appreciate it. I am trying to determine what type of side buttons should be on it and the color of the piping. Thanks!
Woodymyster Posted January 12 #2 Posted January 12 The color of the piping has faded white, but there are traces of the light blue in covered areas.

Woodymyster Posted January 20 #9 Posted January 20 I think I should say that this particular shako is quite large with a size of 7 1/4. It is huge compared to the officer type I have, and makes the proportions look off in regards to the insignia. Also, most will know the Insignia for infantry changed at the end of 1875 from hunting horn to crossed rifles. I believe the unit numbers were not applied early on as seen on this shako, but I cant remember the date when this was changed. Finally, this shako has a white pompom, and it is missing a brass hemisphere that goes between the pompom and the shako. If you were to examine this particular one, you could see the impression of where it once was.
FrankT Posted January 20 Author #10 Posted January 20 Here are the general orders. I think they were a bit vague on what hat to use so several follow up orders were issued. The final one states dress and forage caps. GENERAL ORDERS No. 96 November 19, 1875 2d. Cap badges for all officers of Infantry will be two gold-embroidered rifles without bayonets, barrels upward, on dark-blue cloth ground, with the number of the regiment in silver in the upper angle, according to pattern in Quartermaster General’s Office. Badge for all enlisted men of Infantry except Field and Band Musicians the same insignia, in brass, with the letter of the company, also in brass, above the number of the regiment. Field and Band Musicians will continue to wear the bugle and letters as at present prescribed. 3d. This new regulation concerning insignia for Infantry officers will go into effect on or before the 1st June, 1876. The new insignia for enlisted men of Infantry will be issued and worn as soon as it is received from the Quartermaster’s Department, on which the necessary requisitions will be made. GENERAL ORDERS No. 21 March 20, 1876 II...The letter of the company will be placed in the lower angle, and the number of the regiment in the upper angle, of the cap-badge for enlisted men of Infantry—prescribed in General Orders No. 96, of 1875, from this office. GENERAL ORDERS No. 8 February 8, 1877 By direction of the Secretary of War the following regulation is published to the Army:— Hereafter the cap-badges, numbers of regiments, and letters of companies will be worn by enlisted men of the Army in the following manner, viz: For Artillery—the crossed cannon, with numbers of the regiment in upper, and letter of company in lower, angles on dress and forage caps. For Infantry—the crossed rifles, with the numbers of regiment and the letters of company placed as for Artillery, upon dress and forage caps.
