Per Thorn Posted January 10 #1 Posted January 10 Can someone please help me with this bayonet... Not a single marking... Neither on the bayonet or the scabbard. The fit and finish is excellent. Thank you in advance.
Choctaw Dan Posted January 10 #2 Posted January 10 The bayonet is either a US M-5 or M-5A1 bayonet, made after VJ Day for the Garand rifle. The scabbard looks like it was made or adapted for an American ally to use, perhaps Great Britain(???).
SKIPH Posted January 10 #3 Posted January 10 Per Thorn- The M5 series of bayonets for the M1 rifle were adopted by the US in 1953. The grips on yours appear to be the early version. The false edge has a 90* downward grind, which I have never seen on an M5, usually more rounded. Check out the back of the pommel, to see if there is a maker's stamp. The scabbard is a modern version of the M8A1, and along with the bayonet were probably manufactured by a company like Eickhorn of Germany, but at this point it is a guess. SKIP
Misfit 45 Posted January 10 #4 Posted January 10 The scabbard has the hooks that are for Danish field equipment. Even though unmarked, it looks like a German scabbard by the color and texture of the body and the taper of the tip and the large hole for the leg tie down. The bayonet is not U.S.. The back cut of the blade is too sharp at the false edge. That leads me to believe it is an unmarked Kiffe M5. Marv
Per Thorn Posted January 11 Author #5 Posted January 11 Thank you all for the help. I have a few more m5 bayonet models from different maker's and I'm so surprised there's not a single marking... not on the pommel either. I have the Danish variant and the hooks on the scabbard are the same but it have a different finish and is marked. Build quality is as i said excellent so it feels like it's German made.... But ho knows. Thank you.
