JadedPencil Posted January 7 #1 Posted January 7 What's the generaI consensus on repIacing hivis tape and veIcro on some heImets? Is it better to Ieave it in originaI shape and with it's provenance or is it aIright to to remove and replace with fresh tape? I got a Coast Guard helmet in recentIy and was thinking about doing so. Thoughts?
Allan H. Posted January 7 #2 Posted January 7 The minute you start "restoring" anything, you have altered it from its original condition. Collectors love the worn look on helmets. The velcro pads not being perfect is just fine. That is the way they were put on by the vet. The second you "fix" anything on the helmet, it cannot go back to the way it was actually worn. The only thing that I would do to a helmet to "restore" it, would be if it was seriously damaged at some point after the veteran had finished with it, like if a mouse had chewed on the pads while the helmet was sitting in the garage, or if little Johnny had used a magic marker to draw swastikas on the outer because he was pretending to be one of the bad guys when playing in the neighborhood. Simple wear and tear needs to be cherished for what it is. Allan
majormadmax Posted January 7 #3 Posted January 7 As Allan suggested, I'd leave it as it is. Similar unused/new helmets are easily found, but this one has history to it. It tells a tale as it is, and making it new and pristine erases that story...
JadedPencil Posted January 7 Author #4 Posted January 7 Both very fair takes, I'II refrain from doing so then. Thanks for the input :)
Mikeym_us Posted January 26 #5 Posted January 26 Now if it looked like this then yup tape needs replacing. Don't know how that happened but it was a Gooey mess when I was removing the tape. But it looks as good as new now after I retaped it.
