ludwigh1980 Posted December 31, 2024 #3 Posted December 31, 2024 Very cool. Just purchased a Yangtse Gun Boat grouping at an estate sale here locally. Long time CPO that served on two gunboats in the 1930's including the U.S.S. Guam. His last name was Carlisle. From my research he transferred off of the U.S.S. Guam just before this menu was made. If I recall the U.S.S. Guam was captured and her crew were imprisoned by the Japanese when hostilities broke out.

Guam a little later? An early member roster (maybe from 1974-1975) of the Yangtze River Patrol Association (YRPA), of which Jack Eric Carlisle of Placerville, CO was a member, lists him in U.S.S. Guam from 1938-1939. Those dates might not be exact, but I believe they were supplied by the member. The sailor whose card I posted served in U.S.S. Guam from around 1936-1940, so they were likely shipmates. U.S.S. Guam was renamed U.S.S. Wake in early 1941. U.S.S. Wake, with a skeleton crew of mostly radio operators aboard, was captured by the Japanese in Shanghai on December 8, 1941. Take care, Steve Bryson
