adamoi1984 Posted April 7, 2009 Share #1 Posted April 7, 2009 So I picked up a bdu shirt a few months back that had SF, Ranger and Airborne tab out lines along with with SF SSI and battle patch. above the US Army tape is appears to be an senor Parachutist badge and an EIB badge. But below that, there is a darker color area thats about 2" x 3" on the pocket. I was thinking maybe a rigger patch, but it could also be a pilot or aircrew patch. Does anyone know what that patch could be?
hawkdriver Posted April 8, 2009 Share #2 Posted April 8, 2009 Doubt it's aircrew. Aircrew are about 2 1/2" long and typically 3/4" high.
Rakkasan187 Posted April 8, 2009 Share #3 Posted April 8, 2009 Could it possibly be HALO wings? The only other badges I could think of, due to size, and it being on the pocket is that of either a recruiter, which was on the left pocket, or depending on the age of the BDU jacket, it could be the JUNGLE EXPERT patch. These patches were authorized for wear until the late 1980's. The SF unit that was in Panama at the time I went there in 1985 wore them on their BDU's. After I completed jungle school, and returned to Fort Campbell, KY, we were authorized to waer them on our BDUs and OG 107s but only for a very brief time. (about 6 months) then they became unauthorized. If the patch was on the right pocket and it was square, it may be that of the Drill Sergeant Badge, but you mentioned it was on the left pocket, so I would have to go with my first two guesses. good luck, and I hope this helps... adamoi1984 Posted April 8, 2009 Author Share #6 Posted April 8, 2009 Pocket or pocket flap? Its on the left hand pocket flap. Its not dead center ether, its off towards the left of the left hand pocket. I thought it could be HALO wings, but it seems a bit wide for that. I also thought maybe foreign award of some sort, but those are normal on the left hand side, above the name tape.
Rakkasan187 Posted April 8, 2009 Share #7 Posted April 8, 2009 If its on the pocket flap, the only other patch could be Pathfinder, but again, that is rather smaller than the dimensions you gave. If you can post a picture, it may help. Smitty....
Andrei Posted April 8, 2009 Share #8 Posted April 8, 2009 Adam, be patient and you will certainly find out a fully patched up BDU or DCU from a SF operator. They can not be that rare even if they are harder to pick up than other unit uniforms. A.

They can not be that rare even if they are harder to pick up than other unit uniforms. A. Andrei, SF uniforms are getting much harder to find over here in the US. I have talked to numerous surplus dealers and shop owners around the Army bases and they say they have people come in everyday looking for SF patched BDU's and DCU's. According to them, SF patched uniforms leave the store almost immediately. I don't know what to think about it all actually. I guess your idea to keep on looking is the best bet all the way around. Haha, its almost become a hobby within a hobby. Plus, this store has almost a dozen SF BDU shirts, the only problem is that they strip the patches for separate sale. UGGGGGGGHHHHH...........I hae when they do that. If they have a dozen, then you hit a goldmine my friend. If they are cheap enough, I'd buy them all and restore them. Seriously, SF BDU's and DCU's are getting harder to find. I buy all the ones I see ,if they are cheap enough. Arch

Also, I wonder if I should(can?) look up the shirt? the stamp on the inside (US Army Quarter Master Panama stamp (?)) has what looks like a serial number. Although I doubt THAT would be able to be looked up as it was issued to an SF operator.

However, if you have a good trained eye, you can rummage around the bins and normally find the patches that went with the shirt (all except the name tape, which sucks). But I wonder if I could look up an SF trooper who served in Panama, who had the same qualification?

Nkomo Posted April 8, 2009 Share #18 Posted April 8, 2009 On the inside of the jacket, at the bottom, you will see a manufacturers tag. There should be a DLA or SP number. Beside the DLA or SP number, there will be a series of numbers. For example: SP100-99-D-0344. The number in the middle (99) is the date of manufacture. Hope this helps! ABrangerjoe Posted April 24, 2009 Share #21 Posted April 24, 2009 Could the dark spot be a diver's award? Some SF personnel are SCUBA qualified, I saw a BDU jacket awhile ago that had the diving helmet. I'll post a pic of it later.

adamoi1984 Posted April 24, 2009 Author Share #23 Posted April 24, 2009 Here's the SF BDU coat with the diver helmet Could be, Im thinking that it could be one of the following four: Rigger, Scuba, HALO, Air Assault; Each of which could have been personally tailored differently. Without actually having a picture I cant really be sure.
