Al Appenheimer was among the most experienced hands with mules in the Marine Brigade, having grown up farming with mules in central Illinois  and, at age 21, driving 30-mule-hitch combines across oceans of wheat in eastern Washington State.

 

This book includes much information on the care of mules on the Western Front, anecdotes about individual mules, care of harness and other paraphernalia, care of wagons, caissons & carts, descriptions of hauling rations and ammunition into the front lines at night during heavy barrages, and so forth.
