Armyman 101 Posted December 16, 2024 #1 Posted December 16, 2024 Hi what would be the best way to clean these dog tags to make them shiny again
David Minton Posted December 16, 2024 #2 Posted December 16, 2024 For me the answer would be “do nothing,” but that’s my personal opinion.
kfields Posted December 16, 2024 #3 Posted December 16, 2024 I agree with David, I wouldn't scrub off the patina. Most times, making stuff look new and shiny is like scrubbing away the value of the item.
gerard Posted December 16, 2024 #4 Posted December 16, 2024 At our place for partial cleaning and not to further damage the object, a stroke of 000 steel wool with a light friction to keep the patina and to keep it long-lasting, a stroke of hairspray on both sides of the piece, it there is no briance afterwards
1sg Posted August 5, 2025 #5 Posted August 5, 2025 Why would you want them "shiny again?" They got this way from honest sweat and grime from doing who knows what. You've got some real history here. Why mess it up? Airborne! 1SG Wilson
268th C.A. Posted August 5, 2025 #6 Posted August 5, 2025 My look at this is, the do nothing. I look at a dog tag as you cant get any more personal than than that, the soldier sailor airman or Marine wore that around his neck the time they were in Service, It has there sweat & DNA all over it. It maysound crazy to some. But thats my take! Leave them alone. Some times when the air cuts on in the house the tags will ring togeter, I like to think there talking. silly but who knows...
