emeacho Posted November 25, 2024 #1 Posted November 25, 2024 I work with the volunteers aboard the WWII submarine USS Torsk (SS-423), which is berthed in Baltimore. Our organization, the Tork Volunteer Association, is made up of many submarine veterans and people just interested in U.S. history. We have been working for about 25 years to restore, preserve and maintain the submarine, its spaces, systems, and equipment. We are now making an effort to return the Torsk's living appearance by adding items like clothing, dishes, condiments and other items that make the boat look lived in. We are in need of the 60s-70s vintage laundry bags that hung over and snapped onto the rails of the bunks in Crew's berthing. They were a green and tan plaid bag about 21" long and 7 inches in diameter. They had four straps that wrapped over the rails on the side of the bunk and snapped to hold them in place. If you have one or more of these bags stashed away in your attic or basement and would be willing to donate it or any other submarine artifacts you may have acquired please let me know. We would be willing to reimburse you for shipping. It would go a long way to making the Torsk the memorial we have worked so hard to make it. Our website is usstorsk.org. On it you can see some of the work we have accomplished over the years. It will also refer you to our Facebook page which will show you some of our recent accomplishments. We are a 501C3 organization so, donations are tax deductible. Thank you.
mikie Posted November 25, 2024 #2 Posted November 25, 2024 Hello. A few years ago o found some white Navy submarine laundry bags and bought some as gag gifts for a couple of ex sub sailor friends. They are 1990s era. I’m not sure but I may have one tucked away somewhere. If you are interested, I will see if i can find it and will happily give it to you. mikie
Salvage Sailor Posted November 25, 2024 #3 Posted November 25, 2024 The same white bags were used in the 1970's They were also used on surface ships, we had them snapped on the racks of a DDG I served on in the Atlantic
emeacho Posted November 25, 2024 Author #4 Posted November 25, 2024 Sure, Mikie, please send it when you have time. Out address is Torsk Volunteer Association, P.O. Box 1076, Mount Airy, Maryland 21771. Thanks so much. Let me know what it costs you for postage. Mike
emeacho Posted October 1, 2025 Author #5 Posted October 1, 2025 The USS Torsk (SS-423) is still in need of the 1960-70 era rack laundry bags (see photo below). If you have one and would be willing to donate it to the Torsk Volunteer Association, we would sure appreciate it. We are trying to make Torsk look like the crew is still living aboard and having these rack bags on the bunks would go long way to accomplishing that goal. Or address is Torsk Volunteer Association, P.O. Box 1079, Mount Airy, MD 21771. As I said before, if you would like you can put your name on it (if not already there) and you will live in infamy! Thanks! (Notice we have them bolted in place so they won't disappear with a visitor.)
