mvmhm Posted November 16, 2024 #1 Posted November 16, 2024 Several weeks ago I got an email from a guy asking if we wanted the uniforms, hats, medals etc. that he'd been given that belonged to a distant relative, and which no one wanted any of it (yes, there's a back story there). He dropped everything off yesterday; it's taken me all day to photograph and edit everything. There's some items from his father as well - who was a brainiac of some sort because he was added to a classified wartime list of smart people. There's some WWII dated gear that supposedly belonged to the dad, but a Vietnam dated liner and shovel cover too....anyway, here's some of the items from the dad (I'm just doing a few things as I'm tired of this keyboard!) Both liners look unissued - never had liner bands or the chinstrap; they're essentially brand new. The liner on the left is a 1945 dated Westinghouse. ZThe one on the right side is dated 1963. Also show is the smart peoples roster and his draft notice. Mark sends
mvmhm Posted November 16, 2024 Author #2 Posted November 16, 2024 As for the sailor....he spent 14 years in the Navy, all in subs; after he got out it seems he was a lost soul who ended up doing a year of hard time, and became an alcoholic. I think if he'd stayed in the Navy things would have been different but who knows. He died a couple months ago, BTW. I got his seabag full of uniforms except for his sailor hat, and his liberty bag. The majority, if not all of his personnel file is in the group as well. I assume the H.M. Submarines is a souvenir of his travels.... Mark sends
mvmhm Posted November 16, 2024 Author #3 Posted November 16, 2024 ...and his jumpers....some nice liberty cuffs. I was expecting to see a Japanese or Hong Kong tailor but it was made in the States. They all have the trousers with them as well.
mvmhm Posted November 16, 2024 Author #4 Posted November 16, 2024 To me, this set is the best piece of the lot.
mvmhm Posted November 16, 2024 Author #5 Posted November 16, 2024 The ubiquitous pea coat and a couple shirts......and some very well worn ship's caps.
mvmhm Posted November 16, 2024 Author #6 Posted November 16, 2024 ...and some patches...some of them are sewn to wool lined corduroy(?), and some are made in Japan.
mvmhm Posted November 16, 2024 Author #7 Posted November 16, 2024 I forgot these medals - they also belonged to the dad.
mvmhm Posted November 16, 2024 Author #8 Posted November 16, 2024 There's a coupl;e small boxes with insignias, belts, tie clips, etc. Shown here is a portion. The bottom set of dolphins are sterling Balfour's...but the pins have been ground away, because it actually goes on the belt buckle in the photo with the lighter. The watch is Swiss made, nonmagnetic and waterproof...and it still runs!
mvmhm Posted November 16, 2024 Author #9 Posted November 16, 2024 ...and some of the paperwork. Overall, a pretty neat group. Mark sends
mvmhm Posted November 16, 2024 Author #10 Posted November 16, 2024 One more set...these cards are pretty cool.
RustyCanteen Posted November 20, 2024 #11 Posted November 20, 2024 That is a nice grouping, from a certainly underappreciated part of our history. RC
