Hi. This is embroidered on the back of a submarine cap.. Would this type of naming be used on a crewman's ball cap on ship as I thought that nick names weren't allowed? Any help with this would be appreciated. Thank you

Between 1972-1999, while I was on active duty, I never heard of any prohibition about nick names. Everyone had a Nick name, and I find that as I get older, I don’t remember their real names anymore. Nick names or job titles were commonly pun on your stuff. People knew who you were more than with real names. For example, you might find a jacket that had “Palworkitz” on it, “Who the “F—-“ is “Palworkitz”?  “That belongs to Ski”!

That's great thank you. I bet there was a lot of humour amongst the crew. I was also thinking that this could have been a female member of the crew with a name like Ali Wolf. All the best. Martyn
