Father V Posted November 2, 2024 #2 Posted November 2, 2024 This is quite a short list, given that there are whole books documenting various buttons with the backmarks that existed at various times. As of this year there’s a specialty volume on Revolutionary era buttons (not a lot of backmarks then), Federal Period, Antebellum & Civil War, and Colonial through 1976 in one volume, then there are two books that just deal with backmarks and the companies they represent without reference to the front face, though the better of those two also includes abbreviated front face information.
JohnK83882 Posted November 2, 2024 Author #3 Posted November 2, 2024 Right. The header was great seal buttons so we're talking 20th century onwards. And it's just some guy's list. Hardly authoritative and comprehensive but it's something. I remember the books. I'm just today getting an earful from the Civil War forum folks.
Father V Posted November 2, 2024 #4 Posted November 2, 2024 Ah, I thought maybe you meant a particular design of button after the fact. The wording in the original post was just “Army button” and that covers a heck of a lot of territory. :-)
JohnK83882 Posted November 2, 2024 Author #5 Posted November 2, 2024 Right. My mistake I tried to change the wording on the header but there was no way.
otter42 Posted November 2, 2024 #6 Posted November 2, 2024 What books do you recommend for identifying military buttons? Thanks Ken
JohnK83882 Posted November 3, 2024 Author #8 Posted November 3, 2024 Record of American Uniform and Historical Buttons is the big one. I just bought one for $91. And I just know somebody's going to post a pdf of it after I get it.
otter42 Posted November 3, 2024 #9 Posted November 3, 2024 Thanks much for the help, I have some buttons, and run across them frequently. So a reference would be great.
JohnK83882 Posted November 3, 2024 Author #10 Posted November 3, 2024 I've been hearing they don't do so well on the great seal buttons, 1902 and after. I've posted some backmark pics of groupings by age for the model 1902, ww1 and ww2 era buttons so hopefully that'll be some help to somebody.
Father V Posted November 9, 2024 #11 Posted November 9, 2024 Albert is a good source, despite its age, especially for post CW buttons as almost all subsequent sources have ignored modern times.

I'll soon find out. My copy's coming today. Maybe somebody will come out with a book covering the great seal buttons.

JohnK83882 Posted September 4, 2025 Author #14 Posted September 4, 2025 This web page seems to have the main list with a little extra info and better spacing. https://inkspotantiques.com/index.php?main_page=page&id=10&srsltid=AfmBOopxj6sRZFzKtFq94j-8nWQ18IAuNr-KSZSdEulwfPfX9D241A2E
