yves-croc Posted October 29, 2024 #6 Posted October 29, 2024 Hy, This flight deck mishap took place aboard USS America on 7 december 1966 while steaming in Caribbean Sea Ops Area with CVW 6 for training. The A4C is BuNo 147828 AE 513. The pilot is Ltjg K. W. Leuffen a Vietnam squadron Vietnam vet. AN Brogan was injured attempting to stop the A4C. At 1521 while proceeding to a spot position on the bow after a recovery the A4C went out of control after the brakes failed. The plane rolled off the bow and became entangled in the spot net on a vertical position. Aircraft was recovered with limited damage. About helmets, pilots used both APH 5 with black Sierra kit for O2 Mask and APH 6. This 1965 photo of VA 36 aboard USS Enterprise gives a good view of the helmets
