From what I can tell 10th SF wasnt directly deployed to Vietnam, some of their officers spent time, was Capt James J. Murphy one of them?

My hardly informed guess is this is fake, but I would appreciate to hear your thoughts and the tells, as Im trying to learn.

Thanks!

The Forum member who can give you information on the lighter itself is @yokota57. He has an extensive knowledge of lighters and their association with the military.

There is a Capt. James J Murphy listed in the chaplain section of Who's Who from 5th SFG. (Information below is from Radix Press website).

Looks like a good, period correct West German-made "Consul". 10th SFG in Germany and Bullseye881s information points to authenticity. I would have it without reservation.

Ahh of course the seller had advertised it as Vietnam so that was in my mind, but with them not serving in Vietnam and the Consul lighter it makes much more sense. Thank you for the feedback.

No, the 10th Special Forces Group (A) was never deployed to Vietnam, but some of its soldiers and officers did rotate through the country. As the United States became increasingly involved in Vietnam, counter-insurgency became the primary focus of the Special Forces, rather than the traditional unconventional warfare. While the 10th SFG(A) was never deployed to Vietnam, the soldiers and officers assigned to it did rotate through the country as part of different special forces groups.

The eBay seller listed this as from the Vietnam War. Maybe not? The lighter in question was made in Germany, 1st Battalion, 10th SFG was in Bad Tolz, Germany. The dates 1962-1964 might represent the time he was with 1st Battalion?
