Simon Trew Posted October 22, 2024 #1 Posted October 22, 2024 I hope some people find these interesting. 21 1:25,000-scale defence overprints of defences (sorry, defenses) along the Sicilian coastline attacked by US forces, and some areas inland. Almost all are edition of 19 June 1943, although a couple are 15 June. I'd be interested to learn if there were later editions. Also, does anyone have the HQ Force 343 document/s that provide descriptions of each numbered location? Unfortunately, I don't. I will post separate images of some individual maps in this thread, but this set of images clarifies the sheet numbers and titles (if you zoom in) and the defense legend.
Simon Trew Posted October 22, 2024 Author #2 Posted October 22, 2024 Sheet 272 II NE 'Niscemi', overprint 19 June 1943, drafted by US 649th Engineer Battalion, printed by (British) 12 Map Reproduction Section. Shows actual DZs of elements of 3rd Battalion, 504th PIR and 1st Battalion, 505th PIR, as well as Objective X and D+1 battle sites.
Simon Trew Posted October 22, 2024 Author #3 Posted October 22, 2024 Sheet 272 II SW 'Gela', showing location of 1st Infantry Division and Ranger landings, as well as areas over which Italian and German forces counter-attacked 10-11 July.
Simon Trew Posted October 22, 2024 Author #4 Posted October 22, 2024 Sheets 275 I SE 'Scoglitti' and NE 'Dirillo'. 45th Infantry Division landing area.
Simon Trew Posted October 22, 2024 Author #5 Posted October 22, 2024 Seven sheets, showing area of 157th Combat Team amphibious landing and locations of numerous scattered airborne landings.
Simon Trew Posted October 22, 2024 Author #6 Posted October 22, 2024 GSGS series 4229, 1:50,000 rather than 1:25,000, and not overprints. But helpful for filling gaps (especially east of Gela / south of Niscemi) in 1:25,000 series just posted. Nice clear mapping. Mostly Second Edition (coloured) though one (S Croce Camerina) is First Edition.
Simon Trew Posted October 22, 2024 Author #7 Posted October 22, 2024 GSGS series 4072, 2nd edition (1943) 1:500,000-scale Sicily map. Pencil lines presumably added by a previous owner, possibly a sortie to the Palermo area.
Simon Trew Posted October 22, 2024 Author #8 Posted October 22, 2024 Back to the overprints. This one is sheet 271 II NE 'Licata', showing amphibious landing areas for part of 3rd Infantry Division.
