Hello gang,

I hope you're all dong well. As for me, I'm feeling great! 3 weeks post surgery (laminectomy L4-L5 and benign tumor excision) and now ZERO sciatic pain! I thank all who sent me well wishes.

I also excited to share with everyone a piece I've been hunting for the past 45+ years, when I first learned of its existence. An uncommon town medal for returning WW I vets from Newport, Delaware.  Even though listed in "State, County, City, and Organization Medals for World War One" Second Revised Edition by Richard L. Planck, I started believing it was sheer fancy. I never saw one on line, for sale or even for reference. I was extremely pleased when the opportunity arose to purchase it along with a batch of other Delaware medals.

The chase is finally over!

Now on to the next one :)

Thank you for stopping by, my best wishes to all,

Joe

Joe, Congratulations on the successful surgery.  My sister had the same issue and surgery so I can imagine how good it is to be sciatic pain-free.

As for the Newport, Delaware medal, congratulations on that find as well. It is indeed a rare one.  Louis Small estimates about 26 were awarded. Nice to see one "in the flesh", so to speak.

State and local WW1 medals are a tough area to collect, for sure. Might be a new one to a lot of folks. I don't see it in this list. http://www.omsa.org/files/jomsa_arch/Splits/1989/222101_JOMSA_Vol40_7_28.pdf

Not surprising about OMSA, other than hearing about this medal I found Planck's book referencing the medal, but they had no photo.

Dennis (bertmedals) mentioned above Louis W. Small's book [Revised Comprehensive List of World War I Service Medals Issued by States, Counties, Cities & Towns] and I remembered I had this book, and on page 12, he lists it as well, his maker and type are spot on. Both books referenced in this thread are excellent material if you dive into this area of collecting.

Thank you for stopping by!

Joe

The ID books i had were photocopy sets bound with those plastic strips. There was a primo four volume cavalry gear book that came out in I think 85 that I had to have but that medal book is essential stuff. Just weird its not a pdf somewhere.

True, in the digital age you'd think it would be available as a pdf. Perhaps due to copyright or other legal issues?

I was a librarian so I know about copyrights, but there's no reason today for an in-demand book to be out of print, for crying out loud. There used to be a joint that mostly did college dissertation reprints that would send paperback versions of certain in demand but out of print books.
