Primoris Scio Posted October 12, 2024 #1 Posted October 12, 2024 I need help identifying both ribbons found on a Reservists WW1 Captain's uniform. Any thoughts about the first ribbon? I believe the second ribbon is the Spanish War Campaign Medal from the 1898 Spanish-American War, can anyone confirm?
CinamonToastCrunch Posted October 13, 2024 #2 Posted October 13, 2024 Due to the two dark colored bars on the ribbon it wouldn't be the Philippine Campaign medal with a similar ribbon design except the two bars are red. I agree with your assessment that it is a Spanish War Campaign medal ribbon. The other ribbon is too difficult to see the ribbon details but it doesn't look like it has any from the picture so it might be a China Campaign medal ribbon.
Primoris Scio Posted October 13, 2024 Author #3 Posted October 13, 2024 Yes, my thoughts exactly! I found his name of the 9th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, Co. B for soldiers who served in the Spanish-American War, they were operating around Santiago, Cuba; therefore it is now proven that the 2nd ribbon is the Spanish War Campaign Medal! However, even if the 1st ribbon was one of the related China Expeditionary Campaign medals there are no solid color ribbons except for the U.S. Imperial Order of the Dragon Medal, which has 3 different types that I have found (and you had to be an officer to be inducted). Also, the order of precedence is wrong if the 1st ribbon is related to China, since the Boxer Rebellion took place in 1900. This is the only version I have seen as a single color that is light enough to match his 1st ribbon. Thoughts?
