manayunkman Posted October 8, 2024 #1 Posted October 8, 2024 This group of mostly paper represents the portion of Lt. Col Wade Hampton Bowie Jr’s career, in the late 1970s, as the officer in charge of General Alexander Haig’s security when he was Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) at SHAPE. His obituary and some interesting pieces of the group.
manayunkman Posted October 8, 2024 Author #2 Posted October 8, 2024 The SHAPE leather armband is an applique, the crest and white border are raised with velcro attachments on the back.
manayunkman Posted October 8, 2024 Author #3 Posted October 8, 2024 The pile of paperwork turned out to be very interesting as Bowie was chief of security during an attempt on Haig’s life and much of the paperwork is about that and the investigation. For now I’m going to stick with some background and general information. Here is a document that corroborates that Bowie is head of security.
manayunkman Posted October 9, 2024 Author #4 Posted October 9, 2024 The program for General Haig’s farewell diner.
manayunkman Posted October 9, 2024 Author #5 Posted October 9, 2024 A Christmas card from Haig with an original autograph.
manayunkman Posted October 9, 2024 Author #6 Posted October 9, 2024 An invitation to Bowie and his wife from the Haig’s.
manayunkman Posted October 9, 2024 Author #7 Posted October 9, 2024 A SHAPE brochure and postcard of the HQ.
manayunkman Posted October 9, 2024 Author #8 Posted October 9, 2024 I have reports and interviews concerning the attack and potential assassination of General Haig as well as other interesting papers. I will post them if there is interest.
manayunkman Posted October 9, 2024 Author #9 Posted October 9, 2024 No interest at all? I'll just keep it to myself.
manayunkman Posted October 9, 2024 Author #10 Posted October 9, 2024 One last rattle of the cage. Who’s this?
History Man Posted October 9, 2024 #11 Posted October 9, 2024 That's a great grouping. I've got a group of items from General Bernard W. Rogers who served as SACEUR for around 7 years, believe him to be the longest serving in that role.
manayunkman Posted October 9, 2024 Author #12 Posted October 9, 2024 Thanks for the comment, I’m sure your group is more interesting than this one which is mostly paper history and security information. I even have the maps of Haig’s home and grounds at the castle Gendebien.
manayunkman Posted October 10, 2024 Author #13 Posted October 10, 2024 Anyone remember the man in the drawing I posted?

That could be Rolf Clemens Wagner who was convicted of the assassination attempt on Haig. This is a later picture of him after he was released from prison.

This is a later picture of him after he was released from prison. It’s a sketch of the man who drove the motorcycle who was ID’d wearing a helmet. Rolf was the passenger on the moto and he was ID’d before he put his helmet on. I have the police sketch of Rolf and will post it. There are also several interesting eye witnesses accounts of US SHAPE personnel who witnessed up close those involved.
