Question about Marine Patches

I hope it is alright with everyone if I ask another stupid question.

Since I have started collecting patches, I am really getting interested in the units and history of the patches. I was looking thru my Pacific Warriors book today. I noticed that the Marines in the pictures don't have any patches on their uniforms. I could find very few pictures where they wore patches in battle. Do Marines not wear patches on their battle fatigues or am I not looking correctly?

Thank you for any help....Kat

Didnt wear patches on their HBT's at all, but I have seen a few with ink or stencilled unit markings. Remember, Marines are the Plain Janes of the services and had very little on even their dress uni's. The only exception, at least during WWII, would be aviators who sometimes wore squadron patches on their flight gear. Grunts, no.

Thanks so much for your help. I wanted to make sure that I was not looking at the pictures wrong. I have seen Marine patches for the different divisions. Did they ever wear them on a uniform at any time? Thanks again...Kat

During WWI and then again in WWII Marines were authorized to wear unit patches on the left shoulder of their service (forest green) and dress blues. Otherwise Marines didn't officially wear shoulder patches. Some old time Marines felt that the shoulder patch was an Army thing and brought too much attention to the individual unit and took away from the Marine Corps as a whole.

Thanks everyone for answering my question. I hope people don't mind me asking questions like this but I really am interested in the history of items.

Steve, what you said about it taking away from the Marine Corps as a whole did cross my mind. I thought that might be a reason but was not sure. I figured I would ask the experts.

Thanks again....Kat
