Simon Trew Posted October 1, 2024 #1 Posted October 1, 2024 Original air photos / target maps. Hope some people find these interesting.
CurraheeMan Posted October 15, 2024 #2 Posted October 15, 2024 I used to live about an hour NorthEast from Aachen. That third image you posted is so visceral - hard to imagine that kind of devastation to such a beautiful city.
ludwigh1980 Posted October 18, 2024 #3 Posted October 18, 2024 I echo that. Wandered around Aachen with my Sister who was stationed near there in the USAF nearly 20 years ago. Hard to believe what it looked like then and what it looks like now. I can't imagine what was lost to destruction.
Simon Trew Posted October 19, 2024 Author #4 Posted October 19, 2024 For information, the WW2 TV channel on YouTube (Paul Woodadge) is currently running a series of episodes about Aachen 1944. I've only watched one (I think there are at least three, possibly more) but I suspect all are worth watching.
Simon Trew Posted October 23, 2024 Author #5 Posted October 23, 2024 This is the 1:25,000-scale defense overprint for Aachen (sheet 5202 in the GSGS 4414 series). Of course, it shows what the Allies thought was there in September 1944, rather than the actual defenses. Almost all the red symbols are anti-aircraft positions identified from air photos.
