Jamecharles Posted September 30, 2024 #1 Posted September 30, 2024 Good day everyone, I am studing blue dress army uniforms since a while but I still have some doubts about few things, one of my doubts concern about military police branch. US army military police branch ever had blue dress uniforms in 1930s / 40s period? I wanna be more specific about this: I would be curious to know if MPs have ever been authorized to wear blue dress uniforms with the colors of their branch in 1930s and 40s or not. The army regulation wasn't that specific until 1936 and in 1938 (here below the detail from Circular n.70 of 1936 and AR 600-38). What's your opinion about this matter? doi you have any clue about? do you have any 1930s / 40s example of this specific branch? Thanks in advance GS
Jamecharles Posted September 30, 2024 Author #2 Posted September 30, 2024 BTW same question could be made for other branch of the army like permanent professors of the United States Military Academy, Transportation corps, Armored corps and Bureau of insular affairs. Those branches are not mentioned in the army regulation for blue dress of 1930s / 40s but I have the proof of their existance, this is the reason why I am asking for the MP branch, I never found an evidence, neither a dress visor cap or trousers with colored bands. GS
Rhscott Posted September 30, 2024 #3 Posted September 30, 2024 Officially the US Army Military Police Corps is the youngest of all the branches, as it was officially established in 1941. US Army officers wear branch colors as a lapel facing on the mess dress uniform, and branch colors on the rank shoulder boards for other dress blue uniforms. Enlisted men do not wear branch colors. As far as the colors in the 1920s and 1930s: The color yellow piped with green was assigned to the Military Police by Army Regulation 600-35 dated 20 April 1922. With the establishment of gold for the Armor and the use of green for the insignia on the Armor flag, the colors for the Military Police were reversed. The current colors, green piped with gold, were assigned by Army Regulation 600-60-1 dated 26 October 1951
QED4 Posted September 30, 2024 #4 Posted September 30, 2024 I would be very surprised if there were any Military Police dress uniforms before 1941. Military Police was a originally detailed branch, you were assigned to it but t was just a job not and actual branch it was the Provost Marshals Department and the units were usually part the Headquarters of other units. The crossed pistols were used but officers were still a member of the branch they were commissioned in. It was like Army Aviation after the AF split off and before Aviation became a branch in the 1960s, you could be a pilot in an aviation unit but were still technically and artilleryman or engineer or what ever branch you were commissioned in. It was the same with armor, tanks were part of the infantry and often wore the unofficial insignia of crossed rifles with a superimposed tank. It wasn't until it became a separate branch that they got the green and white branch colors. I would say an officer who was assigned as division (or army or what ever size unit) would wear the color of the branch he wore before the assignment.
