Threewood Posted August 24, 2024 #1 Posted August 24, 2024 This was an expensive week. These are my first Luxenberg wings. I found the bombadier wing on ebay and just after I won I was offered a pilot wing from 5thwingmarty. I couldn't turn it down as I rarely see these pop up for sale. The first pattern is stunning. The facets on the shoulders and cuts in the feathers make it look 3 dimensional. They are heavy as well. The early Balfour pilot wing was also on ebay so I threw a bid at it that and won. Early pattern and one I hadn't seen before. When it rains, it pours. My wife is very concerned even though I didn't tell her what I paid. I think she is on to me.
Threewood Posted August 24, 2024 Author #2 Posted August 24, 2024 I either need a new display case or I need to stop collecting....🤣
rathbonemuseum.com Posted August 24, 2024 #3 Posted August 24, 2024 As a 40 year patient of wing disease I’m afraid to tell you there is no cure. And I collect worldwide, not just US. And yes, significant others are quick to see the signs. I was gonna say, I was going to offer to sell some doubles of mine but perhaps I should wait til the dust clears…! Enjoy. Life is short. I love having them. Tod
pfrost Posted August 24, 2024 #4 Posted August 24, 2024 I can tell you how the logic of a "new display" case goes. 1) I need a new case because the old one is filled, so I will buy one 2) The new case is only partially filled and just looks silly with only a few wings in it. 3) Thus, I must buy more wings to fill my new case. Repeat ....repeat and repeat... Next you will think... I should have a case for every rating (pilot, gunner, bombardier, etc) Then you will think... I could also have a case for every wing made by a company (my Luxenberg case) Then you will think... I just need one WWI wing.... and a bullion WWI wing... and a half wing... and a Dallas wing... and a Dallas half wing.... then you need a new case. Then you think... Darn, RCAF, RAF, RAAF, RNZAF wings... well those guys were our allies, I should have a case for them. But then again, the Nazi wings... they were probably shits, but they did honorably serve and it does go with my WWII USAAF stuff. Can't have the enemy Axis stuff in with the heroic American/Allied wings... so I must get a case for that. Hey... I just found an interesting squadron patch... I need a case for that too. Oh well, now that I am divorced and living in a nice 1bedroom apartment, I could probably use all that empty closet space to store my cases in....
5thwingmarty Posted August 24, 2024 #6 Posted August 24, 2024 I see a Beverlycraft Aircrew wing but no Beverlycraft Pilot wing. That is an unbalanced collection that needs to be corrected. And those jump wings and glider rider wings don't belong in this case....
Threewood Posted August 24, 2024 Author #7 Posted August 24, 2024 Beverlycraft pilot is on my short list. As is a Blackington pilot. So I definitely need a new case...or two.
warguy Posted August 24, 2024 #8 Posted August 24, 2024 Well I was bridesmaid on that early Balfour. I have one but need another to place on a period pilots uniform. The first pattern Balfour matches a period photo I have of the pilot. You beat me by $2.00. Congrats. I love your collection. Seems like these things come in waves. After not buying a wing for about four months, I bought three I have been looking for a while in the past two weeks. Feast or famine I guess.
pfrost Posted August 25, 2024 #9 Posted August 25, 2024 You will have reached peak case when you buy a case to hold all your cases
Bull Moose Posted August 25, 2024 #10 Posted August 25, 2024 I’m looking for one these for my next storage upgrade.
Threewood Posted August 25, 2024 Author #11 Posted August 25, 2024 Museum quality specimen case. That's when you know you have a thorough wing collection. One drawer full of Beverlycraft pilot wings showing variations from the same die as the die wears down lol.
Threewood Posted August 25, 2024 Author #13 Posted August 25, 2024 A new display case has been ordered. A very conservative case. I guess I have room for more wings now.😁
rustywings Posted August 26, 2024 #14 Posted August 26, 2024 Wonderful confessions from true “wing collecting addicts!” Thank you all for the giggles and described individual hobby reality-checks! It sounds like our chosen collecting focus is alive, well. and is reaching epidemic proportions!

cwnorma Posted August 27, 2024 #16 Posted August 27, 2024 I’m on the road now so I’ll keep this short and a characteristically straightforward. I honestly feel like I get significant enjoyment from my collection through displaying my wings. Nice display cases are a small investment that pays huge dividends of satisfaction in return. Chris
Threewood Posted August 27, 2024 Author #17 Posted August 27, 2024 Chris, I agree. I enjoy looking at them and will pull them out of the case to inspect them, front and back, every now and again. They really are interesting artifacts. Then again, I don't have a large collection so they are easy to display. The downside is that my wife can also watche the collection grow. But honestly, she likes my hobbies and doesn't worry much about what I spend.
Threewood Posted September 7, 2024 Author #18 Posted September 7, 2024 Updated with a few more wings. The jump wings were migrated over to the new case along with the 2" wings.
Threewood Posted December 21, 2024 Author #19 Posted December 21, 2024 Update to the case with more wings and a few more on the way. All of the post war wings and Navy wings are in the second case. I'm running out of room again lol.
